Dog-friendly beaches near Bude
North Cornwall's beaches are the big draw, and plenty of them welcome dogs all year round.
- Duckpool is our nearest beach, just two miles away. A wild, National Trust cove at the foot of the Coombe Valley, dog-friendly all year, with rock pools, a stream and space to run.
- Sandymouth & Northcott Mouth are two spectacular National Trust beaches a few miles north, both dog-friendly year round, with huge expanses of sand at low tide.
- Widemouth Bay has golden sand and gentle surf a little south of Bude, with a dog-friendly stretch.
A quick word on Bude's two town beaches, Summerleaze and Crooklets: they're lovely, but they carry a seasonal dog ban through the main summer season (roughly Easter to the end of September). Out of season, dogs are welcome, and the year-round beaches above more than make up for it in summer. Restrictions do change, so it's always worth a glance at the signage when you arrive. The best dog walks near Bude
You don't even have to get in the car. Woodlands sits in 15 acres of its own woodland, with walks straight from the door, carpeted in bluebells in April and May and beautiful in any season. There's also the playing field (dogs on lead), the adjoining field where dogs are allowed off lead to play, and the large hill meadow that backs onto the woods (dogs off lead too), so there's plenty of room for a proper romp. Bailey certainly approves.
Just two miles away, the South West Coast Path delivers some of the most dramatic clifftop walking in England, between Hartland Point and Bude, with sea stacks, hidden coves and waterfalls the whole way. For something gentler, the Bude Canal towpath is flat, scenic and easy on older dogs (and older legs).

Half the joy of a walk is the reward at the end of it, and Bude looks after dog owners well. Most of the beach cafés are happy to have dogs on the terrace, and plenty of the pubs welcome them inside by the fire. Practical tips for a Cornwall holiday with your dog
A few things we've learned over the years:
- Check tide times before a beach trip, as some beaches all but disappear at high tide. A quick search for the day's tides saves disappointment.
- Pack for Cornish weather. A towel (or three), a drying coat and paw-wipes make life easier after a muddy valley walk or a sandy beach.
- Watch the cliffs. The coast path is stunning but unfenced in places, so keep dogs close near the edge.
- Mind the livestock. You may meet our sheep and neighbours' cows on the farm walks. Most are friendly, but best given a wide, calm berth on a lead.
- Bring their own bed and bowls if it helps them settle. A familiar smell makes a new place feel like home fast.
